Cruise Day 11 .

Monday 3rd July 2023

Novi Sad , Serbia

Novi Sad  is the second largest city in Serbia and the capital of the autonomous province of Vojvodina. It is located in the southern portion of the Pannonian Plain on the border of the Ba?ka and Syrmia geographical regions. Lying on the banks of the Danube river, the city faces the northern slopes of Fruška Gora.

According to the 2022 census, the population of the administrative area of the city totals 368,967 people, while its urban area (including the adjacent settlements of Petrovaradinand Sremska Kamenica) comprises 306,702 inhabitants.

Novi Sad was founded in 1694, when Serb merchants formed a colony across the Danube from the Petrovaradin Fortress, a strategic Hapsburg military post. In subsequent centuries, it became an important trading, manufacturing and cultural centre, and has historically been dubbed the Serbian Athens. The city was heavily devastated in the 1848 Revolution, but was subsequently rebuilt and restored. Today, along with the Serbian capital city of Belgrade, Novi Sad is an industrial and financial center important to the Serbian economy.

Novi Sad was the European Capital of Culture in 2022] and the European Youth Capital in 2019

Petrovaradin Fortress , nicknamed "Gibraltaron/of the Danube", is a fortress in the town of Petrovaradin, itself part of the City of Novi Sad. It is located on the right bank of the Danube river. The cornerstone of the present-day southern part of the fortress was laid on 18 October 1692 by Charles Eugène de Croÿ. Petrovaradin Fortress has many tunnels as well as 16 kilometres (9.9 mi) of uncollapsed underground counter mine system.

The monument to the victims of the raid in Novi Sad was erected in 1971 in Novi Sad, Serbia, and represents a famous place as an immovable cultural asset of great importance.

On the quay that today bears the name Quay of the Raid Victims, the fascist occupier executed a mass shooting of more than a thousand innocent citizens of Novi Sad in the so-called "January Raid" from January 21 to 23, 1942. The bronze composition "The Family", 4 m high, dedicated to the victims of the Second World War was erected at that place.

The monument is the work of sculptor Jovan Soldatovi? and was discovered in 1971. At the beginning of 1992, the monument was completed with another 78 bronze plates made by the same sculptor. Four plaques (three with text in Serbian and one in Hebrew) contain basic information about the event, and 66 plaques contain the names of the murdered persons. Between the plates with the texts are rhythmically arranged plates decorated with the symbols of the Star of David (4 plates), the cross (2) and the eye (1). Below the monument are plaques with texts in Serbian, Hungarian, Slovak and Hebrew.[2]

The reconstruction of the forcibly removed plates was carried out in 2004
